Smoky Mountain Vacation
So you want a Smoky Mountain Vacation, but you are not quite sure what route to take when you begin to look for lodging. There are so many options available, from cabins and condos to camping and hotels. We will touch base on lodging shortly, but first lets chat about why Pigeon Forge? Many people visit this area because they want to explore the outdoors, but also not be completely “away from it all.” Pigeon Forge is the perfect compromise. Within a day’s driving from most of the Eastern United States, this area is a hub for people from all walks of life that are ready to just unwind, perhaps hike a trail or two and do some shopping in one of the most loved and travelled-to cities in the East.
There is so much to do in Pigeon Forge and there is a good reason it is so popular among families. The city caters to young children, middle and older children, not to mention there are many things to do for those of you that may be vacationing without children. This gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers something for everyone, including those with an adventurous spirit and those that like to shop, see a show or visit a museum.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
One of the strongest draws to Pigeon Forge is, of course, the National Park. Only a short drive from the center of town, The Great Smoky Mountains offers more than 800 miles of hiking trails. If you stop by the Sugarland Visitor Center, there are numerous folks ready to help you plan your day, including park rangers. Whether you are looking for the perfect hiking trail, exploring for waterfalls or would prefer doing an auto tour, the folks at Sugarlands can help you plan your itinerary! There is even a short waterfall hike to Cataract Falls at the visitor center. It is the perfect trail for those that do not have a lot of time to spend in the mountains or need a short hike that is relatively flat and easy. If you have a bit more time to explore, I would suggest you check out Clingman’s Dome as it is the highest point in Tennessee. It is accessible via a short, but steep paved trail. It is worth the effort, the view is spectacular.
When you get into town and see the grandeur of the Smokies for the first time or even if it is your 20th time, there is just something magical about it. No matter where you are in town, you have a great view of those rolling peaks, but there are many places throughout Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg where you can really “take in the view!” One of those places is Anakeesta. On the ride up to the adventure park, you can take an enclosed gondola or a chairlift up the mountain. This ride gives you plenty of time to take in the views! Anakeesta is a new adventure park that visiting families have fallen in love with. Young children will be able to test out their skills by navigating through the Treehouse Village via rope bridges and a maze. Older kids can enjoy the thrill of soaring through the treetops on their ziplining courses and everyone will love the Tree Canopy Walk. Those visiting can also enjoy souvenir shopping, cozy areas around a campfire, scenic views and some good food while at the park.
If you need a break of hiking and exploring the mountains, check out one of the many family attractions in Pigeon Forge and the surrounding areas. One of the most loved attractions is The Island. You could easily spend all day here roaming around and enjoying the many kid-friendly games and activities, numerous shops, outdoor music and restaurants such as Margaritaville, Timberwood Grill and Paula Deen’s. If you are looking to attend a dinner show, Dolly Parton’s Stampede show never ceases to amaze and delight audiences. It offers a grand foot-stomping time and tasty southern food, not to mention the great memories you will leave with. Another great family attraction is Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg. This aquarium even offers an indoor playground for kids and underwater tunnels for close-up views of penguins and sharks. The kids will never want to leave. It is also voted the Best Aquarium in the U.S….so if you are in the area, I would certainly take the time to visit.
